Turns out you need more than 512bhp to make a fast car

Groundhog Day
9.00am Wednesday 1st February
Report to Stansted, fully refreshed after a few days not flying. Going to Bernie Ecclestone's Paul Ricard circuit in the south of France to hook up with the new Corvette Z06 - 7-litres, 512bhp, superlight construction and one of the best tracks in Europe. I can feel my heart thrumming in my throat.

7.00pm
Leave circuit rather disappointed with ZO6. It's fast but feels edgy on the limit and uncommunicative too. A Porsche 911 Carrera S is slower and less powerful but I know which one I'd rather drive. At least we're on the road with it tomorrow.

1.00pm Thursday 2nd February
ZO6 even worse on the road. If ever you needed proof that there's more to making a fast car than making it go fast, the Z06 is it. Drove a standard, 400bhp Corvette to the airport. Preferred it.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class
S-Class is flawed but still miles ahead of the competition
6.00pm Friday 3rd February
A new Mercedes S-class arrives, mine for the weekend. I've driven the latest S before but now I have the chance actually to live with it for a few days.

8.00am Monday 6th February
The S-class goes but not before it has convinced me that, despite its ugly lines and sometimes flawed ride, it has continued the noble S-class tradition of blowing all its competitors clean out of the water.
