| Preparing for the off |
This cross-continental trek leaves this month and has no rules whatsoever. Simply buy a rubbish car, drive it to central Asia in three weeks and then give the car to charity and fly home. Sound simple? Maybe - but don't forget this rally goes through Serbia, Bosnia, Georgia and Uzbekistan, finishing in Tashkent. Not exactly the world's prime tourist destinations. Organised by Julian Nowill, the Plymouth-Dakar rally founder, it may become a bigger event next year if this year's escapades are successful.
Toby Ling, a pharmaceutical scientist, is taking part with Stuart Hannah, an aircraft mechanic. They're driving an H-reg Lada Samara 1.3SL which cost £67 on eBay. "I'm looking forward to seeing if 16 cars can drive through Asia en masse," Toby says. "We're not sure how it's going to pan out."
Richard Stevens is driving a Peugeot 205 1800 diesel: "I like the idea of doing something barking that doesn't cost a lot," says Richard. "We are aiming to be the tightest team on the rally." What exactly that means remains a mystery - watch this space...
