| The original design suffered budget problems |
The more committed 4Car readers among you may remember our previous features about our entry into the Red Bull Soap Box Race, when I planned a high-tech, low drag, head-first gravity racer. Couple of kyboshing issues on that score I'm afraid. Firstly, Hertfordshire's finest fabricators estimated the cost of the chassis build to be some way beyond our total budget. Which in turn meant that, because it was beyond my ability to build (given the need for meticulously jigged curved tubes), a redesign was in order.
So I hatched what I thought was a rather novel build idea: "Might make a good feature," I mused to assembled members of the office, "to do both the design and build in a weekend. Just turn-up and, Scrapheap Challenge-stylee, do the lot there and then." Good idea, was the general consensus, though I suspect it was subjected to a bit more mockery than they let on. A lack of available hands at weekends, however, revised the plan further. I'd prepare a bit in advance, buying some steel, the wheels, the bodywork and hiring the right tools, and then we'd just build it in a single day instead. Tuesday, July 27th, in fact. After all, how hard could it be...
