| Boasts 560bhp from turbocharged engine |
 |
Adding to the on-track thrills, the categories of cars competing in Rallycross are unique. Firstly, there are the Supercars, based on ex-works Ford Focus and Escort WRC cars, but instead of boasting the usual 300bhp, these things kick out 560bhp, or, in the case of the crowd-pleasing RS200, 840 bhp. They've all got four-wheel drive, some run with manual gearboxes, others with sequential gearboxes.
Pat Doran, owner of a recycling business, is a driver of one such Supercar, a Ford Escort WRC. He plans to transplant the running gear and engine from this into a Fiesta next year. 560bhp in a Fiesta? Now that will be worth watching...

But meanwhile, I'm still trying to come to terms with what Pat can do with his awesome Escort. Still strapped in so tightly that my voice has jumped a couple of octaves, I've also tightened up the chinstrap on the helmet I'm wearing. Not because I'm worried about Pat crashing, but to prevent my head from bouncing off the roll cage inside the car - that's how much lateral force we're generating.
