| Breathtaking drive en route to Pebble Beach resort |
 |
It's not every day you find yourself wafting along the Hippie Trail in Marin County above San Francisco driving the new long-wheelbase aluminium Jagwah XJ through - and I repeat - through, giant sequoia trunks and twelve hours later, you're standing next to $600,000 worth of auto excellence on the 9th hole at Pebble Beach, California. Some things in life are pretty fine.
Wigwams and tepees are the homes of choice along the Hippie Trail -and then you arrive in Monterey, where a two-bedroom home on the peninsula will set you back around $6m. In fact, it was but a few days ago that I was standing on the edge of a fairly substantial residence on the water's edge which was on the market for a cool $30m. This is not the people's peninsula. The house was actually a little too shiny and perfect - not dissimilar to the auto exotica on display down the road at the exclusive golf club.

Getting to the event is an experience in itself. We left San Francisco and cut through the hills on Highway 101 and then joined Route 17, where the drive came into its own, before linking onto the Route 101 at Santa Cruz. This is the legendary coast road to Monterey and Carmel. The mountains and scenery were stunning, again with huge redwood trees hugging the road and the highway winding through the hills. But at 60mph? It seems so unjust.
