| Jay not a fan of F1 |
It is not just cars. I often go down to the Rock Store in Malibu. It's where all the bikers hang out, even guys like Governor Schwarzanegger. One day there's a racer down there. He's got a Harley Sportster. The rest of the guys are all on 130 hp Yamahas and Kawasakis... at least 75 lbs lighter than the Harley. But when the boys head up the twisties into the mountains he leaves them for dust. The look on the others faces was like they are ready to sell their bikes then and there. It was like beating a Porsche driver in a Frogeye Sprite.
I enjoy watching races. I have been to many. But like so many sports the TV coverage brings it alive. Those on board cameras are amazing. It's a shame there weren't on-bard cameras in the era of what I think was the greatest ever race - Nuvolari beating the Germans in an outdated Alfa. In those days a great driver in a substandard car could beat a good driver in a good car. That can't happen now.

| Jay prefers manual 'boxes like the one in his Ford GT |
I am not a big fan of F1. It bears no relation to any car I drive. There is no shared experience. I know paddle shifts and semi-automatic gearboxes came from F1 but I prefer a manual shift like the one in the new Ford GT. It's real driving. I don't see the point of paddle shifting. You can't beat the computer. It's like trying to beat HAL the computer at chess or the fat rich guy trying to beat the real racers. It's just not going to happen.
