Motor Show: Hyundai Genus

01 Mar 06

The Genus, a sporty-looking large people-carrier, is Hyundai's take on a crossover vehicle. Designed and developed by its European centre in Russelsheim, Germany, it's a strong hint at a future production vehicle.

The Genus has MPV-like short overhangs with a long wheelbase and a wide cabin, giving good cabin space for its overall size. Its interior is versatile, with a hatch in the floor of the boot that can lift up to create a bench seat. This can then be extended over the boot sill and, with a sliding deck concealed in the bumper, then create an outside seating space or a pick-up-style deck to transport bikes and sports equipment.

To prevent it from looking too truck-like, it has inset B-pillars for a sleek side view and a large panoramic glass roof. Inside, it's finished off with natural-effect aubergine leather, silk-like textiles, beige leather detailing and anodised metallic trim. These are influenced by 'the continuous flowing nature of sand dunes,' apparently and incorporate 'vast surfaces seemingly sculpted by gently flowing winds'. Having had a good look round it, we can confirm that there's not a right angle to be seen.

Powered by Hyundai-Kia's 2.2-litre diesel engine and five-speed auto transmission, the Genus is four-wheel drive. It's Hyundai's take on the R-Class theme and, even if a vehicle with the full rear-end seat-cum-picnic-area-pick-up-bay doesn't make it onto the streets, something looking rather similar to this may well do.
