Motor Show: Lincoln MKX

11 Jan 06

Video: Detroit 2006 Full Show Report

Ford's Lincoln division is reviving its old numerical-naming system, but applying it to an all-new type of vehicle. The MKX, known earlier as the Aviator, is one of the new breed of car-like crossover SUVs, well-equipped and with an emphasis on comfort rather than off-roading ability. It's a sister model to the Ford Edge and both models are built on a version of the Mazda6 platform, also shared with the Fusion (the US-market saloon), Mercury Milan and Lincoln Zephyr saloons.

A five-seater, the MkX is equipped with just about everything you'd need - and then some. Features include stability control, adaptive headlights, a panoramic glass roof, heated and cooled eight-way adjustable seats, a 14-speaker audio system, full leather-and-wood trim and DVD navigation. The rear seats can be folded in a one-touch operation and at the touch of a switch.

It is powered by a new-generation 3.5-litre V6 engine, which will be widely used in many Ford ranges, with a new six-speed automatic transmission. It goes on sale in North America late this year, but will not be offered in Europe; it will be manufactured alongside the Edge in Oakville, Ontario.

Two versions will be offered when sales start in the autumn, Compass and Compass Limited. The Chrysler-Mitsubishi-Hyundai 2.4-litre petrol engine (172bhp) is standard-fit, with a five-speed manual gearbox; a CVT clutchless gearbox is optional with Limited models. A 2.0-litre diesel engine will be offered in Europe.
