Feature: American Road Trip

I was trying to figure how to make a trip to the US for the wedding of an ex more exciting. So when Oliver e-mailed me to say he had reached New Orleans on his round-the-States road trip in a 1990 Volvo I booked my flight to join him for a two-week jaunt to New York by whatever circuitous route grabbed our fancy day by day. We were going to do the Modern American Road Trip. Would it be a relaxed expression of personal freedom à la Kerouac or is today's trip a guided tour of the best America has to offer in big hotel and hamburger chains?
