Motor Show: Vauxhall Zafira VXR

02 Mar 05

Vauxhall has launched the second-generation Zafira at the Geneva Motor Show. Based on the latest Astra platform, the new Zafira - which will go on sale in the UK in July - has a larger, higher-quality seven-seater cabin with more legroom for all occupants, a version of the Astra's IDS Plus (Interactive Driving System) chassis with continuous electronic damping control and optional adaptive forward lighting and panoramic glass roof. Six inches longer, 1.5 inches wider and a tiny bit taller than the current model, the new Zafira is styled more like the Astra and will be available with up to 30 storage compartments. Two diesel and four petrol engines will be offered, including the 200bhp 2.0 turbo petrol unit and the latest 1.9-litre CDTi diesel.

The new Vauxhall Zafira range - based on the latest Astra platform - goes on sale in July, and the hot VXR follows in October. This 240bhp seven-seater will replace the current GSi; it shares the Astra VXR's 2.0-litre turbo engine and six-speed manual gearbox, and is good for 144mph and 0-60 in 7.2 seconds. The IDSPlus chassis control system is fitted as standard, with large brake discs and 18-inch wheels with 225/40 ZR18 tyres; 19-inch wheels are optional. Styling has been suitably souped-up, with a honeycomb grille, larger front bumper with central air intake and foglights, a tailgate-mounted spoiler, side sill extensions and a rear bumper with twin trapezoidal tailpipes. Recaro sports seats are fitted up front, with colour-coordinated door panels and trim detailing, and VXR logos on the sports steering wheel and gearshift. Prices will be announced nearer to launch.
