Ford launched its 220bhp Focus ST; this much-anticipated hot hatch will join the UK Focus range towards the end of 2005. It's fitted with a turbocharged 2.5-litre engine and six-speed manual gearbox, and the show car features bright orange paintwork and 18-inch wheels with 225/40 low-profile tyres. The paintwork will be offered as a limited-edition colour when the ST goes on sale.
It's not an all-out road racer, though; Ford says that its "design makes its performance attributes clear, but in a manner that also supports refinement, craftsmanship and practicality. Focus ST remains a comfortable car for everyday family motoring." Sadly, there's no more news on a less compromising Focus RS, though the ST should be plenty quick enough for many buyers. "When performance enthusiasts see this car, they are going to have high expectations", says Jost Capito, head of Ford's racing and performance division. "This car looks fast from its design, and every functional attribute is being engineered to deliver on that expectation."
Rather less excitingly, Ford is also showing the Focus saloon, which it claims has "limousine style" and "new levels of refinement and craftsmanship." Ford admit that the Focus saloon won't be a big seller in the UK, but will be popular in Spain, Mexico and the Asia-Pacific markets.
