In a bid to revitalise its flagging Pontiac brand - currently undergoing a product renewal offensive - GM has launched coupe and convertible versions of its G6 saloon. The convertible features a Karmann-developed folding hard-top, which folds in less than 30 seconds, and both models have a 2+2 seating configuration "suitable for four adults." Two versions of each will be offered, GT and GTP. GTP models come with a 240 bhp/245 lb ft 3.9-litre V6 with a good ol' four-speed auto, or for keener drivers, a six-speed manual transmission (coupe only). GT models have a 200 bhp/220 lb ft 3.5 V6 and four-speed auto 'box. We're unlikely to see either of these models in the UK.
Pontiac also unveiled its 2006 Torrent, an SUV with a 3.4-litre V6 (185 bhp/210 lb ft) and five-speed auto, available in either front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive form. Aimed more at on-roading school-runners than farmers, it comes with standard air conditioning, remote locking, electric windows and CD player, and an upmarket cabin finish; options include leather seats, an MP3 player and satellite radio. We're unlikely to see this vehicle in the UK either, but as it shares its platform with the Chevrolet Equinox and Saturn Vue, it gives a few clues to Europe-destined new models such as the next-generation Vauxhall/Opel Frontera and its Chevrolet (Daewoo) twin, all part of the same GM midsize 'family'.
