The Ford Escort has been a part of British life for 32 years, but it's all over now - Ford is killing off one of its best-selling nameplates, leaving the Focus in its place. If you want a new Escort you must move fast, because production ends in July. Often the nation's best seller, the Escort has brought affordable, convenient and unpretentious transport to millions, always wrapped in attractive - or at least, inoffensive - styling. Escorts have been coveted, crashed and customised, but most of them have simply provided transport. There are so many on the road that they will take years to fade from view, but it will happen - when did you last see a Cortina, for instance, a model that was at least as common at one time?
