As if cars like the new 350Z and MM concepts weren't already attracting enough attention at Nissan, at the Detroit Show earlier this year it pulled out a potential successor to the just-axed Skyline GT-R supercar, which Nissan is showing again to gauge reaction in Europe. It's all a bit vague though. This concept could be son of Skyline and then again it couldn't. For a start the Skyline name is rumoured to be for the chop. It has been used in Japan for years on a six-cylinder four-door saloon, the latest incarnation being the 300GT, but it may go for the production version of this Tokyo concept car, which could be known just as GT-R.
All very well but what about the oily bits? Could be a twin-turbo V8 engine and, as today it is likely to be four-wheel drive. It is likely to be very fast (the current Skyline can do 155mph) but slightly less hardcore to appeal to a broader range of customers, perhaps - Nissan hopes - those who might be considering a Porsche. A production car could appear in 2004.
