Fiat Panda
It's cute and loveable, of course. But most importantly, this is a practical car with bags of room which is reassuringly cheap to run. The engines on offer are strong and lively, and the trim levels are generous.
There are a bewildering number of alternatives. You might desire the fashionable Mini, but you may find it too small and too pricey. The Daihatsu Sirion is the lateral-thinkers' choice, and you wouldn't go wrong with a Ford Fiesta or Honda Jazz.
Everyone will want to borrow the Panda because it is so spacious and adorable. It's the coolest Fiat for years. In a bright coloured Panda, even accountants will seem less dull.
Few other cars are as cheap to run. All versions attract 15% tax, apart from the 4x4 (18%). No need to pay more for the diesel for cheaper tax or fuel economy - the lively 1.2 petrol manages over 50mpg.
You could comfortably carry three adult passengers. In terms of refinement, the Panda is surprisingly good; Eleganza versions have climate control, CD, remote locking and electric everything, but the Dynamic with optional air con has all you need.
