Jaguar XJ TDI
Jaguars still look and feel very special, plus they deliver a level of comfort that few others can match. The XJ also has bags of character and old-world charm, although it's a bit old fogeyish for some.
There are the efficient Germans, of course - the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7-Series. However, the closest in spirit to the Jag has to be the wonderful Maserati Quattroporte, although this seems a bit too extravagant for the daily grind.
Jaguars get a lot of goodwill: you look as though you are doing well and know what you're about. There is a niggle, however, that the XJ is for company directors of a certain age, rather than the young thrusters.
Mind you, the wisest heads are often on older shoulders, because by going for the TDI there is money to be saved. Tax liability is just 29% and, if you can live without leather and sat nav, you'll save yourself £2,500 with the entry-level Executive.
Plenty of room, decent diesel performance, surprisingly agile handling and a super-smooth ride: it's the plushest office on wheels this side of a Roller.
