Volkswagen Golf GTI
After a period in the wilderness, the GTI is back, earning its place in our Best in Class rankings. High-quality build, lots of space and a superbly entertaining driving experience are all the reasons you need.
When the new Honda Civic Type-R arrives (mid-2006), that will be worth considering. The Ford Focus ST is a strong contender, and there are many smiles-per-gallon from the Mini Cooper S.
This GTI commands some serious respect and looks understated yet purposeful in your designated parking slot. Everyone will be impressed, even those in 5-Series and XJs.
Not cheap to buy, but reasonable to lease as the retained value is a very strong 65%. Tax liability is 25%, which is better than for a titchy Cooper S.
Five-door practicality is certainly a good thing and the GTI easily reverts to normal Golf mode for everyday commuting and business duties. When you have free time and the right roads, though, what a drive...
