BMW 525d SE
Even a radical redesign that some still find eye-wateringly ugly could not dent the 5-Series' reputation as the ultimate executive express. It's big, practical, well-built and the numbers certainly add up when it comes to company car running costs.
There are plenty of alternatives these days: the Jaguar S-Type is good, for a start. The new Lexus IS range (including a diesel) will be the one to watch, though: it will be less common than the BMW.
It may not win you any friends, as many find it a bit arrogant, but the new 5-Series still cuts a distinctive dash.
Go for a 525d SE, and you get a well-equipped model with a tax liability of 24% (a 520d is 19%). If you want more poke and sporting credibility, there is also the 530d M Sport - which holds over 60% of its value after three years.
It really means business: it drives superbly and is a very relaxed high-speed cruiser. The iDrive button is just like doing a Power Point presentation - easy, once you get the hang of it.
