When you buy a new car, it will come with a manufacturer's warranty, which promises to reimburse the cost of repairs due to any mechanical failure within the stated period. Manufacturer-approved used-car schemes and many smaller garages also offer some form of warranty scheme on used cars.
And it is less widely known that you can purchase independent after-market warranties privately, rather like buying an insurance policy.
