Citroen's new C4 small family car is hailed as a return to form for Citroen; it's a strikingly-styled, innovative and technologically complex machine with unique detailing. But whilst we tend to think of classic Citroens as being quirky and ground-breaking, the company has never particularly distinguished itself in the mainstream small family sector before. We all know of the genius of the front-wheel drive Traction Avant and its successor, the ID/DS, but these were much larger cars; the 2CV, meanwhile, was at the other end of the spectrum, and the gorgeous SM super-coupe something else altogether. So what did Citroen do in the middle?
