Underneath, this car is pure Golf. That means stable, balanced and accurate handling and a ride quality that is up there with the best. Inside, you get the excellent driving position and fine build quality that you'd expect from a Golf. In the back, though, taller passengers will find less headroom than in hatchback Golfs, with hair-stuck-to-the-roof syndrome a commonplace. And if the front seat occupant is on the tall side, rear seat passengers will find legroom is a little tight, too.
With rather indelicate features such as its blinging-chrome nose, VW hopes that the Jetta will draw an audience taken with its upmarket profile but (relatively) pedestrian pricing. And if a bit of badge snobbery is your thing, the Jetta makes a whole lot more sense than something like the too-expensive BMW 1-Series. But then, slightly less sense than something like a more practical five-door hatch with a prestigious badge. Like a Golf, for example.
