Saab has always been out on a limb within GM, like a slightly mad Swedish uncle that no-one really talks about, left to do his own thing. But that position is coming to an end, and the new 9-2X is the beginning of a world of platform sharing co-operation thrust upon the company, with several other models to follow including the 9-7X 4x4. Both the 9-2X, Saab's first 4x4 production car (designated by the X), and 9-7X will be sold only in North America because of their quick-fix nature. The next generations, due in three to five years, will be Europe-bound.
The 9-2X is fundamentally a Subaru Impreza with a Saab nose. Obviously there's more to it under the skin, but not a total reworking because this project has gone from first thoughts to reality in just 18 months, something that shows as you slide behind the wheel and take in the bizarre fusion of Impreza-meets-Saab. Most of the switchgear is straight from the Subaru, including the indicator stalks and centre console, and although Saab has sprinkled a few of its own touches around the cabin, it's clear that this isn't your typical Saab. Engineers didn't get time to move the ignition to the centre console as it is with all other production Saabs, and the all-round quality is a drop from the premium sector standard expected by Saab buyers. The rear seats are tight for adults, and the boot is more lifestyle estate than serious load-lugger, with the seats split/folding 60:40.
