The steering wheel has a perforated leather covering, which, with the automatic aircon and wipers, cruise control and all-round electric windows make the cabin a very pleasant space in which to spend some time.
Safety is a priority for the Verso, coming as it does with a total of nine airbags, including one to protect the driver's knees in case of a frontal impact. However, Traction Control and Vehicle Stability Control - combined with ABS anti lock brakes, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist - should mean that you stay out of trouble. All of these helped the Corolla Verso achieve a maximum five-star EuroNCAP rating, with a maximum four stars for child protection.
The Corolla Verso T180 is an ideal choice as a vehicle to transport the kids in safety, while at the same time keeping the ageing boy racer happy behind the wheel. At £20,900 it's on a par with a five-door Golf GTI, but it's much more practical and has more toys to keep everyone happy.
Significantly, it's also £1000 cheaper than the upcoming 240bhp Zafira VXR and should prove better value to run in the long term, even if it is a little short on outright power.
But when you've got kids, a bit of extra money in your pocket is always useful.
