Driven: Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet (2007-)

Here's what it's not. It's not the fastest car of its type. It's not much of a looker. It's not light - far from it. It's not in any sense cheap, but you kind of knew that already, didn't you?

Which leaves us with what it is: the good things that you'd expect from a 911 Turbo Cabrio, plus a few things that maybe you wouldn't. It's lighter than the last 911 Turbo Cabrio and it's no less economical. It's comfortable and roomy enough for two. It's well equipped and built to last. It rides well, in a sporting kind of way. It grips superbly.

And it's very fast. The Lamborghini Gallardo Roadster may be 5mph faster, but the 911 Turbo Cabrio has a top speed of 192mph and does 0-62mph in an entirely fabulous 4.0 seconds, or 3.8 with the Tiptronic gearbox. These figures suggest a car you'll rarely drive anywhere near its limits, which is true, but only part of the story.

The more impressive bit is that it also has a vast amount of pulling power available all the time. Whatever speed you're doing, whatever gear you're in, whatever type of road you're on, you just put your foot down and arrive somewhere in the middle of next week.
