Driven: Peugeot 407SW

By: Tom Bird

14 Sep 04

Standard safety specification is generous, with seven airbags (nine on top-spec Executive models), an electronic stability control system with ABS, electronic brake force distribution, emergency brake assist and traction control. Air conditioning and a six-speaker CD player with steering wheel mounted controls are also standard-fit. Sat-nav is optional, but we've found it to be one of the noisiest systems around as the CD is constantly being read. Automatic lights and wipers are fitted to most models as is an anti-glare rear view mirror. Parking sensors are optional, but recommended as rearward visibility is poor.

The 407 SW costs £1,100 more than its saloon counterpart and is available in five trim levels, some with part- or full-leather interior. Executive models gain faux-walnut interior highlights.

It's a shame that the 407 SW is neither a genuine sporting estate, nor a capable load lugger. Peugeots have always been special to me because of the way they drive, even if they're not built to Germanic standards of quality. I've grown up with these Gallic charmers in the family, two of which are still under my wing. And although my 205 creaks in all the wrong places and my 1.6-litre 306 doesn't stir the soul with its performance, both make up for any misdemeanour with characterful handling - something which the 407 SW is sadly lacking.
