Driven: Mini One D

28 May 03

Mini

IN THIS FEATURE

It's certainly the best diesel supermini to drive. Mini claims 'go-kart-like handling,' which is slightly cobblers because the car is about 15 times heavier than a kart and doesn't have power-oversteer on demand, but we know where it's coming from. The wheel-at-each-corner stance and low centre of gravity make it extremely nimble and performance is reasonable: 0-62mph in 13.8 seconds and a top speed of 103mph don't sound sparkling, and the petrol Mini One feels (and is) quicker, but the diesel's torque means that overtaking is far from a risky business. Suspension tuned for fun means ride comfort is perhaps a little compromised, but so long as large alloy wheels with low-profile tyres are not specified (the two 15-inch alloy options are fine) it's smooth enough, and even the meanest of drivers will appreciate the Mini's verve, agility and composure.

And to think, all with 58.9mpg economy, compared to 43.5mpg with the 1.6-litre car. This Mini One D surely is a paragon of excellence. But hang on. It demands a £1000 premium over the petrol version - a cost not recoupable by fuel costs for 35,000 miles. We'd find that a bit hard to swallow, and it's one of the reasons that Mini will only sell 1,500 in the UK every year. Still a nice car, but suddenly a less attractive purchase proposition. It wouldn't be an Adventure without a twist in the tale though, would it?
