Driven: Mazda 6 MPS (2006-)

By: Tom Bird

I wasn't going anywhere fast, so I had a good look round the MPS, starting at the back. The first thing that struck me was the frankly godawful-ugly rear bumper; if you think it looks bad in the photos, wait until you see it for real. Then there's the pair of oval-shaped exhausts - really just two regular small round exhausts with extra chromed tips welded on, just like those you'd see hanging off the back of a Kevved-up Saxo or Corsa.

Chunky 15-spoke 18" alloys are fitted - which I can tell you from experience are bloody heavy, and look like they'd be a complete pain to clean. Some side skirts add to the overall sporting-up, but do, in all honesty, look a bit naff, especially the bits fitted to the bottom of the doors.

That just leaves the front, which has a deeper bumper, complete with some round fog lights and a unique grille which channels more air into the engine bay. One difference between the MPS and the regular 6 is its bonnet, raised by 45mm to make room for the top-mounted intercooler. This really toughens up the front end, creating quite a muscular overall look.

The interior is also pretty decent, with some huggy front seats and a smattering of sporty touches including aluminium pedals, stainless steel scuff plates and leather trim. The electrically adjusted driver's seat is very comfy - and the Bose seven-speaker audio system is pretty fantastic.
