With the ever increasing backlash against off-roaders on our roads, Honda is keen to appear socially responsible, pointing out that the CR-V received three stars for pedestrian safety in the EuroNCAP scores - something no rival can boast yet. Honda is also proud of the fact that nearly 105,000 CR-Vs have been built at the Swindon factory in 2004, and the diesel engine will also be assembled there by the end of 2005.
The 2.2 i-CTDi Honda CR-V demands a £1400 premium over the petrol equivalents, although when it comes time to sell, the diesel model should retain at least that much in superior residual value. Prices start at £18,600 for the entry-level SE and £20,150 for the Sport which gains a sunroof, electric seats, front fog lights and cruise control. Top-spec Executive costs £22,800 with sat-nav and leather seats. Insurance groupings are 11 for the SE and Sport, rising to 12 for the Executive, which is a similar result compared with rivals.
And so, to continue Honda's catchy theme tune... "Hate something, change something, make something better..." And although it's been a long time coming, with the diesel CR-V Honda has done just that.
