On the move, the A4 Avant proves to be as capable as the saloon - which means it's almost as capable as any of its competitors. We tested the A4 in Eastern Germany, where once crumbling roads have been patched expertly. Road noise isn't an issue on roads like these.
Wind noise is mildly more prevalent, but only because of the fact that autobahns allow 145mph cruises (in the 3.0 V6) and because of the absence of other noise. The 2.0-litre petrol engine is quiet, the 1.9 diesel just as much so at cruising speeds, while the V6s (petrol and diesel) are refinement personified.
The Audi's weakest link is its chassis. Frankly, no version - even the quattros - drives as sportily as a 3 Series. With stability control on, things are kept under reign - the car brakes individual corners to stop you washing out if you're a bit optimistic on your cornering speed, and it keeps things in check admirably. Turn off the stability control, be a bit ruthless with the controls and it all goes a bit pear-shaped. Best to keep it smooth and relaxed, like a good driver should. Let's face it, the dog wouldn't want it any other way.
