When you think Volvo, you think safety. The Swedish car marker set its stall out in the 70s and 80s big boxlike models designed to resist heavy impacts. They didn't look pretty but that was part of their appeal.
Then Volvo entered the British Touring Car Championship with the S80 Estate - the first station wagon in the BTCC. Sexy was now in, and Volvo ditched the boxy designs and built the stylish 480 in 1987. The sleek C30 hatchback that appeared in 2006 was widely regarded as the 480's successor. There are Volvo legends: the P1800 appeared in the 60s TV series The Saint alongside Roger Moore and the Amazon - a bluff, yet strangely attractive four-door.
