August Horch was a Benz engineer who set up his own company in 1899; after a lawsuit over the Horch trademark, he formed Audi - named from the Latin for 'listen', or 'horch' - and continued to make high-performance luxury cars. Audi was absorbed into the Auto Union in 1932, but after World War II, the company was only able to make DKW-badged economy cars. The brand-name was revived in 1958; Volkswagen bought Auto Union in 1964, and the front-wheel-drive Audi models went on to form the basis of the new Volkswagens (Passat, Golf and Polo).
The Audi Quattro coupe was a successful rally car in the 1980s, and Audi has dominated the Le Mans 24 Hours and Le Mans Series races for the past decade with its R8 and, for the last three years, its diesel-powered R10 TDI. Audi's production car range includes the A3, A4, A5, A6 and A8, with Q5 and Q7 SUVs, the TT roadster and coupe and R8 supercar; upcoming models include the A1 city car and A7 four-door luxury coupe.
