The RAV4 isn't the cheapest option, but it is the best. Engines are trusty and pull well, and it drives a bit like a high-rise GTI. Consider the older pre-2000 model if you want value.
It's one of the most reliable off-roaders, according to recent surveys. Still, avoid low-mileage cars with dented bodies and scuffed wheel examples - sure signs of a hard urban life. The 2001-2005 model is an excellent all-rounder.
Most good ones are with private owners, or have been run as company cars. Toyota Assured is comprehensive.
