Here is an exciting little car that's more than just another nippy hatch. With a great badge, sexy styling and a really interesting interior - and it doesn't hang about either. Even the smallest 1.6 is perky, but the more grown-up 2.0 is much more satisfying.
Build quality is hugely better on all Alfas these days. Cambelt changes are always crucial, though, and these must be noted in the service history at least at 45K mile intervals. Avoid the Selespeed automatic gearbox, which can cause problems and is difficult to fix.
Private enthusiastic owners are a good source, provided they have a watertight service history. A dealer though can provide a decent warranty and some reassurance. Independent Alfa specialists are the best of both worlds.
