
Not that big, but the 5's probably the best executive car ever made. The new one's a real star, too, but we are talking about the older, understated one that still comes with a wide range of great petrol and diesel engines. It's also entertaining to drive and very well finished. Perhaps next year we will consider the new 5...
A full history and a genuine mileage is essential, as many will have been run hard by business users. Sick engines cost fortunes to fix, so avoid cars with smoky exhausts that run roughly. Look out for signs of overheating. Shock absorbers and suspension bushes will need replacing at high mileages.
BMW dealers are losing interest in older 5s, but their Approved Used warranty is one of the best. Independent garages have good examples.
