It's got the badge and the looks - and that ticks the two vital boxes for buyers. Not only that, the CLK has been around for a bit now and the pre-2003 model in particular has fallen into the affordable bracket. Big boot, lots of room for four and nice to drive.
Build quality could have been better on the early models. The repairs bills can mount up when catalysers and windscreen wiper motors fail, as they have done, plus immobilisers have often needed upgrading.
There are plenty of private examples around: for peace of mind, a specialist dealer makes sense in terms of price and preparation. Mercedes dealers have high prices and are not the most customer-focused.
