Why buy one?

It's an icon, pure and simple. These later models may not have the hardcore appeal of the originals, but they are probably easier to live with and more practical - not least because they are right-hand drive. Sensational performance but subtle looks. 2001 model the ultimate new generation M3.

What to look for

It is fairly reliable. Timing chains need changing over at high mileages, otherwise it is the consumable items such as brakes, which need constant replacement. Non-Evo cars less complex and less troublesome. Some cylinder head and manifold trouble.

From BMW Club members and marque specialists. BMW dealers no longer interested.
