Originally launched in 1999, the X5 has been an extremely popular choice on UK roads. Replaced in 2007 by a significantly different new model, which can now seat seven at a pinch.
When it comes to dynamic on-road driving, the X5 is excellent, now second best only to the Porsche Cayenne. The X5 also rides better than the Cayenne and is usefully cheaper than the Porsche. Less thirsty, too - one of the main reasons that the X5 sits above the Porsche is because it can be had with a superbly refined 3.0 diesel unit.
But if you must have a big, sporting, petrol engine, then the X5 can also oblige, right up to a 4.8-litre V8. Inside, it's also the most spacious BMW, has excellent ergonomics and a car-like cabin.
