Immensely desirable and the aspirational choice in this sector, but by no means cheap, the Mk 5 Golf certainly has snob appeal and the appearance of quality to match. The cabin isn't quite as perfectly finished as it should be at this price, but it's still a touch above most of its rivals. Much more responsive to drive than before, the inspiring GTI marks a real return to form, but the mainstream Golfs are rewarding, comfortable and satisfying too. The strong diesels are best-sellers, but the direct-injection FSI petrols are also efficient and powerful. Optional DSG automatic gearbox is class-leading.
