Europe's best-seller in the sector and deservedly so: car-like on-road driving characteristics and as much off-road ability as owners are ever likely to need, plus the usual Nissan reliability and dependability. Revisions in 2004 brought a more user-friendly interior. Well-equipped and competitively priced, it doesn't have quite the same posh image as the Freelander, but has plenty of credibility; it's not a 'pretend' 4x4, being accomplished enough to pass as the real deal. Does great service towing caravans, boats and pony trailers, as well as looking suitably chunky and imposing, roomy and comfortable, it makes a great family all-rounder.
