BMW Z4

The styling's still controversial, but there's no denying that the Z4's an eye-catcher. Hugely improved over the lacklustre Z3 which preceded it, BMW has achieved impressive levels of refinement and comfort with this high-quality roadster - though of course, you're paying top money.
Beautifully engineered with a superb line-up of six-cylinder engines, the Z4 isn't quite as sharp and communicative as the Boxster - its steering feel is disappointing - but it's a great drive nonetheless. The cabin's not particularly well-packaged, but gives an immensely civilised ride.
Solid, stiff and safe, and little more expensive to maintain than a 3-Series.
