A new engine for the big Toyota has elevated it from nowhere to a close third. The new 3.0-litre D-4D from the Land Cruiser musters 169bhp to give the biggest pick-up on the market the gumption the old 2.5-litre sorely lacked.
Now in its sixth incarnation, the world's best-selling pick-up now has huge space inside as well as a massive bed out back. The kit levels have been upgraded in the top-spec Invincible to include a sat-nav and trip computer and it's all well designed.
Holding the Hilux back are some so-so dash materials and a seriously conservative towing figure of just 2250kg. Not good when rivals from Ford and Isuzu can haul up to three tons.
