With sci-fi styling and a screaming i-VTEC engine, the Honda Civic Type-R is one helluva hot hatch. Unlike the first generation car, this Type-R doesn't need to be revved within in an inch of its life to make decent progress, there's now some much needed torque lower down the rev range.
It's a supremely capable car with excellent steering and body control, without being too tiresome on a long journey. It might not be quite as hardcore as the original, but as an all-round package it takes some beating. Go for the GT spec to get the larger real spoiler, air con and triangular exhausts.
