As with the BMW 3-Series, the Audi A4 has received a comprehensive makeover, with an even sleeker body, four new engines added to the range and that dramatic, wrap-around grille, which brings the A4 into line with the Audi 'family look'.
The new car has improved dynamics, which is where the old A4 struggled against the likes of BMW's 3-Series, but it's still not as engaging to drive as the 3. Audi has always impressed inside, though, with one of the best made and beautifully executed cabins in the business.
For those who can't quite cope with the BMW's image and the Merc's too-conservative profile, the cool, understated Audi is the one to go for.
