Like all Volvos, the XC90 is one of the safest cars on the road today. Independent crash test body EuroNCAP awarded the XC90 its maximum five star rating and commented that the 'XC90 has an immensely strong body that provides safe, all-round protection for its occupants.'
Other safety innovations on the XC90 include Roll Stability Control (RSC). This uses a gyro sensor to register the car's roll rate and angle and activates the DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control) system, if required, to help stabilise the car. In the unlikely event of a rollover accident, the XC90's roof structure is reinforced from Boron steel, which is four to five times stronger than normal steel, while the standard IC Inflatable Curtain airbag stays inflated for longer than normal, in case a multiple rollover occurs and runs across all three rows.
The XC90 has been designed with crash compatibility with smaller vehicles in mind, too. Behind the XC90's bumper is a deformable cross-member placed lower than is usual on an SUV, designed to meet with a conventional car’s bumper and activate the other car’s crumple zones and safety systems as intended.
