The XC70 comes with a choice of two five-cylinder turbo engines, both of which offer plentiful performance and exceptional refinement.

One is a 2.5-litre petrol unit, offered with manual or Geartronic transmission, and uses a light-pressure turbo to provide its 210bhp performance - 0-62mph takes 8.1seconds. The other is the excellent new D5 turbodiesel, boasting some 185bhp.

To deliver off-road ability while maintaining on-road dynamics derived from the acclaimed V70 estate, the XC70 employs MacPherson strut front suspension with a multi-link set-up at the rear. This provides excellent road manners, but combined with a 209mm ground clearance, means that the XC70 can still hold its own off-road, making it the perfect complement to the larger XC90 sport utility vehicle.

In addition, the XC70 is available with Volvo's acclaimed Four-C (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept) system, an active suspension system which has separate Sport and Comfort settings available at the touch of a button. The system actively monitors road and car conditions up to 500 times a second and automatically adjusts the dampers to reduce roll in cornering, dive under braking and squat during acceleration.
