To provide security in a frontal impact, the V70 is equipped with dual stage driver and passenger 'intelligent' airbags that deploy in two phases, depending on the severity of the accident, reducing the risk of facial injury from impact with the airbag. Protection from side impacts, which account for a quarter of all accidents, is provided by Volvo's famed SIPS (Side Impact Protection System) and IC (Inflatable Curtain) airbags. To reduce injuries in a rear impact the V70 is equipped with WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System), which reduces the risk of back and neck injuries.

All V70s are available with an optional passenger airbag cut-off switch to enable child seats to be carried in the front seats. Integrated booster cushions and ISOFIX mounting points are available for the rear seats. All three rear seats, meanwhile, have three-point seatbelts.

To help prevent the S80 become involved in an accident in the first instance, all models get amply sized ventilated front disc brakes with ABS and electronic brakeforce distribution as standard, as well as DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control).
