The V70 boasts such a broad range of engines that there's bound to be one to suit every customer. The petrol line-up consists of five-cylinder engines ranging from a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit to the awesome, 300bhp 2.5-litre engine in the V70 R. There are also two turbodiesels, the 163 bhp 2.4D and 185 bhp D5. The D5, along with the 2.5-litre, 210 bhp 2.5T petrol engine, are also available with All Wheel Drive with Instant Traction^TM

Other models are front-wheel-drive, and all V70s have a quality of ride and handling that will surprise those who think that estate cars cannot be dynamic and enjoyable to drive. Front suspension is by MacPherson strut, while rear suspension is by a sophisticated multi-link system tuned to provide an entertaining drive, yet is compact and so does not impinge on luggage space.

An optional Sports Handling Pack is available for the V70, which includes dynamic 18inch alloy wheels and Volvo's advanced Four-C (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept) active chassis. A more advanced and sophisticated version of Four-C was first used on the flagship V70 R and, like V70 AWD models, this car features electronically controlled All Wheel Drive with Instant Traction^TM.
