Volvo's legendary commitment to safety is amply demonstrated on the S80 saloon. When tested, it scored the then-maximum four-star rating in EuroNCAP's crash tests, with a 100 percent score for side impact. The SIPS (Side Impact Protection System) includes side and Inflatable Curtain (IC) airbags to protect front and rear occupants, while 'intelligent' front airbags work in unison with the seat belts and pre-tensioners. Meanwhile, WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System) reduces the risk of neck and back injuries by 50 percent in a rear impact.

To help prevent the S80 become involved in an accident in the first instance, all models get amply sized ventilated front disc brakes with ABS and electronic brakeforce distribution as standard, as well as DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control).
