Befitting its brief as a luxurious executive express, the Volvo S80 has a range of five and six-cylinder engines that offer superlative levels of refinement, effortless performance and superb economy. Five-cylinder engines include 2.4-litre petrol units of 140bhp and 170bhp, 2.0 and 2.5-litre turbocharged engines with 180 and 210bhp respectively, and a 2.4-litre D5 turbodiesel developing 163bhp, while returning an astonishing 43mpg. The range-topping six-cylinder engine option is the mighty T6, a 2.9-litre turbo petrol unit producing 272bhp and some 380Nm of torque from just 1800rpm.
The S80's chassis has been developed to deliver a blend of dynamic response and exceptional comfort. A long wheelbase and stiff chassis deliver stable behaviour, while first class ride comfort is ensured by independent front suspension and a sophisticated multi-link rear suspension. On the 2.4-litre naturally aspirated and D5 turbodiesel models, a comfort chassis comes as standard, while a dynamic setting is standard on all other models. An optional lowered sports chassis is available too, while Volvo's advanced active Four-C (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept) is offered as an option, giving the driver a choice between 'Comfort' and 'Sport' chassis settings.
