Volvo's commitment to safety is as old as the company itself, and just because the S60 is a sports saloon, that doesn't mean that any corners were cut in the pursuit of excellent occupant protection.

The S60's crash protection is enviable. Like all new Volvos, the S60 comes equipped with Volvo's renowned SIPS (Side Impact Protection System), as well as side airbags and an IC (Inflatable Curtain) to protect front and rear occupants. There are also five three-point seatbelts, all of which have pre-tensioners, while all five seats have head restraints. Front seat occupants also benefit from seatbelt load limiters and WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System). In fact, the S60 is so safe that, when it was tested by independent crash test organisation EuroNCAP, it attained a 100% score for side impact and the maximum rating (at the time) of four stars.

Of course, a car is safer still if it isn't crashed in the first place. So as well as being endowed with an agile chassis, all S60s also come equipped with electronic safety equipment such as ABS anti-lock brakes with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution) and EBA (Electronic Brake Assist). Safer still, all models also have DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control), to help regain control should grip be exceeded. The turbocharged, 300bhp S60R, meanwhile, also benefits from advanced all-wheel-drive, which helps increase traction, particularly beneficial in adverse weather conditions.
